Title:
Basto site
Date:
ND
Scope & Content:
Typewritten notes regarding the Basto archaeology site in South Woodstock. Alexis Praus led an expedition to explore the Basto site. Praus said: The excavation and classification of culture remains of the South Woodstock site reveal an Algonquian (?) culture. In terms of a culture classification the site isof the Woodland Pattern, evidently related to Ritchie's southern New York Coastal aspect, positively related to the Massachusetts Nipmuk aspect and to the Old Lyme and Menunketisuck horizons. In terms of chronology, it can only be said that the site is prehistoric and that there is some slight evidence of Iroquois influence during at least a part of its occupation.
