Summary:
A new edition of a humorous book, Draggerman's Haul, remembers Ellery Franklin Thompson and his life as a Stonington fishing captain. With a foreword by Bernard L. Gordon from NEUniv and an afterword by Stephen Jones, UCONN at Avery Point, Carol Kimball cites Steve's chapter of Ellery's funeral in 1986 as being worth the price of the book. Ellery was born on Pequot Hill in Mystic in 1899 and went to sea at the age of 14. He became a celebrity when Joseph Mitchell profiled him in The New Yorker magazine and later Ellery became a author, Viking Press, with his own story, Draggerman's Haul, in 1947. In 1969 he wrote, Come Aboard the Draggers. He smuggled whiskey during Prohibition and hired a woman on his crew in 1961. All his stories are told with sly humor and a homespun philosophy all his own. He even became an artist who painted nudes as well as boats. Locally, he built up fame as a marine artist. He often painted his own boat, the Eleanor, and it is seen in many Mystic homes today. He was said to have performed secret work with the Eleanor during WWII. He told yarns at the Mystic Seaport. Thanks to Mystic's Flat Hammock Press we have one of his books back with us. They have also published another good book, A Perfect Lady: A Pictorial History of the U.S. Coast Guard Barque Eagle, by Tido Holtkamp.
