Summary:
Carol Kimball remembers playgrounds at Quaker Hill School where many games would be, by today's terms, declared dangerous. Many were without adult supervision. Most of the games involved running and shrieking. Some games were mostly for boys, such as Bull in the Ring. Other dangerous games were Snap the Whip and Tag. Kids got dirty and knees were scraped. There were many different Tag games. There was stoop tag where if you stooped you couldn't get tagged. In freeze tag, if you were tagged, you had to stay in the same position you were in when tagged. In shadow tag, the it person had to step on your shadow. In partner tag you linked arms with a partner and struggled to run about the field. There was also Kick the Can and dozens of running games such as Rev Rover and Pom Pom Pull Away and Fox and Geese. Those with the loudest voices usually were winning. There were calmer games like Red Light, Giant steps and Simon Says. There was jump rope, hop scotch and four square and marbles and jacks. There was a game called Echo that was probably peculiar to Noank. One person was it and all the others ran and hid. When the it person called Echo, the ones hiding responded by saying Echo.
