Summary:
Two centuries ago significant storms were named not by scientists but by memories of tragedies left in their wake. Thus the gale of Feb. 15, 1846 which brought sad news to Mystic and Stonington was called the John Minturn storm. The John Minturn was a fine packet ship that went down taking the lives of Capt. Stark, his wife, two of his three children, Noyes Palmer and John Leeds.
