Summary:
The construction of Race Rock Lighthouse in the race off Fishers Island was a marine engineer's nightmare. A stable concrete foundation was completed in 1875 and the lighthouse completed in 1879 due to the efforts of contractor F. Hopkinson Smith and heroric engineer and diver, Thomas A. Scott.
