Summary:
The Peace Sanctuary Nature Preserve on River Road in Mystic, under the provisions of the Mary L. Jobe Akeley Trust, was made the home of the Denison-Pequotsepos Nature Center. The past history of this site, known as Great Hill, was part of land owned by John Fish. Quakers from Philadelphia and Rogerene Quakers of Ledyard, particularly the Whipples, sponsored anti-war sentiments that led to the dedication of the Peace Temple. Mary Jobe, married in 1924 to Carl Akeley, and famous for her photography of the Canadian Rockies would establish a summer camp for girls at the site. Camp Mystic closed in 1930 and when she died in 1966, she left provision for the establishment of a nature preserve on her property. In 1991, Great Hill, the location of the Peace Sanctuary, looks to the future.
