Summary:
James Avery, Sr., appeared in town (Pequot Plantation, later called New London) from Massachusetts about 1651. James Sr.'s sons became prominent in town affairs. When his eldest, James Jr. Married Edward Stallion's daughter Debora, Stallion gave the couple a farm with house and barn that became the famous "Hive of the Averys". In 1923 descendants launced an effort to restore family burial grounds, led by descendants A. W. Pierson and John D. Rockefeller. A Groton genealogist, Lucy Morgan Adams, who traced her roots to the Avery and Morgan families took pictures of the Ledyard cemetery removal of Capt. Samuel Avery, who died May 1, 1723, and his reburial in Poquonnock.
