Summary:
Captain Silas Beebe (who died May 1, 1863) bought land at Devil's Foot Hill (so named because of a stone said to show the devil's footprint) and used the pond near his home to provide ice for his family. Joseph Bergman used Beebe Pond for ice harvesting as recently as 1930. Carl C. Cutler, respected historian and author, did much of his writing in the woods near Beebe Pond. Books like "Greyhounds of the Sea" and Queens of the Western Ocean". Beebe Pond Park (which totaled 95 acres in 1990) remained as part of Groton's open space (in 1990) and served as a reminder of Captain Silas Beebe, an intrepid mariner, and Carl Butler, who recorded much of Mystic's maritime history and helped found Mystic Seaport Museum.
