Summary:
An old time Christmas custom in school was to give a gift to a name drawn from a hat. The teacher set the price of the gift and in Carol Kimball's elementary class that price was a dime. The practice was very democratic, each child got one gift, and the teacher always kept a few presents to make sure no child was left out.
