Summary:
Mystic's Portersville Academly was built in 1839 as a Greek-Revival structure designed and erected by Amos Clift. It very nearly burned the evening of Jan. 11, 1849 when a rousing performance by Frank Dudley literally brought the house down, with the second floor and its furnace crashing into the first floor. Fast thinking William H. Potter ordered snowballs handed in through the windows to put out the fire and the Academy is now a cherished treasure of the Mystic River Historical Society.
