Summary:
Born in Vermont in 1815 Dr. Horace Wells became a Hartford, Connecticut dentist in 1838. He is believed to be the first to use an anesthetic such as Nitrous Oxide, known as laughing gas, and chloroform for dental surgery. Not a success in his life time, he committed suicide in jail, ending his life at age 33. A memorial in Hartford's Bushnell park lists his name and attributes him as, "…the Discoverer of Anaesthesia, December 1844".
