Summary:
Old Mystic, once called "Head of the River" and often spelled "Mistick" from an
Algonkian Indian word meaning "river running to the sea" is the spot where John Mason's troops crossed in 1637 to attack the Pequot Indian fort. "Doorways to the Past", a house tour arranged by the Mystic River Historical Society, will feature ten village homes including the earliest built by farmer Christopher Eldredge about 1770, the latest a Greek-revival built by carpenter Matthew R. Mead in 1852 and the John Hyde mansion. The Old Mystic United Methodist Church will provide refreshments and a display of memorabilia and the Indian Colonial Research Center will display Indian artifacts and a Victorian doll house. Quoketaug Ranges will have historical encampments of the French and Indian War and an 1820 fur-traders camp.
