Summary:
The need for well educated clergymen and government officials caused Yale University, founded in 1701, to begin in 1702 in Saybrook. This avoided the expense (and loss of local revenues) of sending SONS to Harvard, which had been established in 1686. However, in 1716, the trustees voted to move the school to New Haven, where substantial financial aid was promised.
