Summary:
John Paul Jones, once buried in Paris, now rests at the Naval Academy at Annapolis. Evan Thomas wrote a fine book about this American Naval hero. Jones was born John Paul in Scotland in 1747 and sailed to Virginia as a cabin boy at age 12. He became a fugitive and added Jones to his name. Jones sailed the Ranger to American feats of glory in 1777 and 1779, but felt unsatisfied and joined the Russian navy where he lost favor before his death. He was buried in France. A century later, General Horace Porter, an American ambassador, located Jones's grave and encouraged President Theodore Roosevelt to exhume and transfer Jones to America amid much ceremony in 1906.
