Summary:
Charles Swede Momsen commanded the S-1 submarine in 1925 when submarine S-51 sank killing all aboard. Momsen used the cylindrical hangar of the S-1 to construct two experimental rescue bells and in 1928 began work on the underwater escape device which became the Momsen lung. In 1939 when the submarine Squalus sank off Portsmouth the rescue vessel Falcon used the bell to rescue 33 lives. The Squalus was later raised and rechristened the Sailfish and sank seven Japanese vessels in World War II.
