Summary:
The author of this article was inspired to write about Robert Fulton after reading another article in The Day about a submarine named after him. Kimball explains that this is the second submarine named after Fulton, and recalls seeing the first one during her childhood. Robert Fulton is often associated with the steamboat due to its immediate success, but Fulton had indeed been a pioneer in submarines as well. The innovation, unlike the steamboat, was not accepted during Fulton's lifetime. Fulton had offered his submarine technology to Napoleon in 1801, but a peace treaty in 1802 rendered it unnecessary in the immediate future.
