Summary:
Christened by eleven-year old Gracie Knapp, granddaughter of Deacon Robert Palmer, the steamer Nutmeg State was launched in January 1892 from Noank shipyard of Robert Palmer and Sons for the Bridgeport Steamboat Company. Just seven years later, before leaving Bridgeport for New York, with Capt. Charles M. Brooks in command and 60 passengers and 55 crew, fire claimed the steamer and ten of the engine room crew. The steamer City of Lawrence, of the Norwich Line, with F. H. Beebe as her captain saved many lives as did the crews of the tug W.C. Reed and yacht Kismet. Nutmeg State's boilers were salvaged and sold to the New Bedford Line for the steamer City of Fitchburgh on the Portland run.
