Summary:
Albert Crary Burrows, born June 7, 1937, was a grandson of Capt. Ambrose H. Burrows who was commander of the famous Hero during the War of 1812, and the son of Capt. Brutus Burrows. Albert was one of Mystic's most successful maritime captains and was best known as the hero and Captain of the Rio Grande, one of the largest Mallory steamers. Albert's quick thinking saved his 97 passengers and the steamer which had caught fire. He retired from the open sea about 1900 to live on Pearl Street in Mystic but later went back to work as a barge captain for the railroad and lost his life when his barge, the Lorberry, was sunk by the steamer Talahassee.
