Summary:
In 1841 Norwich dedicated a monument to Uncas, famed sachem of the Mohegans as detailed in Oberg's book. In Cooper's popular novel, "the Last of the Mohicans", the name "Uncas" was chosen for his story's Native American hero. But historian Melissa Fawcett published a book called, "the Lasting of the Mohegans" as proof that the tribe is very much alive. Today we see the Mohegan Sun, built in Uncasville, as further proof of the lasting of the Mohegans and Norwich residents have a suitable marker for Uncas, sometimes spelled Unkas, Woncas, Oncas or Uncas.
