Summary:
In Norway in 1880 an original 78-foot Viking ship was unearthed from a Gokstad burial mound. In 1893 a 78-foot Viking ship, a faithful replica of the longships which brought Lief Ericcson to these shores, built for the Chicago world's fair, left Norway en route for America. Her first port of call was New London. Ninety-nine years later the relic rests in Chicago in a deserted shed in Lincoln Park Zoo.
