Summary:
Murder at Darling Hill is a book based on a true story and published by the Stonington Historical Society. Judith G. duPont is the author of the book about a murder that occurred in Stonington on the dark night of April 19, 1874 when Henry Langworthy and his wife, Maria, drove their carriage home to their farm on Darling Hill from a temperance meeting at Mystic's Union Baptist Church. In the farmyard they met an excited and disheveled hired man, Bill Libby, telling a tale about two strangers attacking him and killing Langworthy's youngest son. Langworthy found his 17 year old son, Irvin, dead in a chair in the kitchen. An older son, Courtland, 33, lay badly wounded upstairs in his bedroom. Dr. Charles Brayton and Constable Samuel Tillinghast were summoned. Murder weapons, a bloodstained axe and a blood-spattered iron drill, were found. Suspicion fastened on the hired man, Libby, who, strangely, did not try to escape. He pleaded innocent. He was convicted of second degree murder in the New London courthouse on circumstantial evidence and sentended to life in the Connecticut State Prison at Wethersfield. It is the perfect book to launch the society's new Rambotham Editions. The next book will be a reprint of the Vargas book, Stonington Ice, long out of print.
