Summary:
The Lieutenant River within the borders of Old Lyme is a tidal stream which rises in Rogers Lake and flows into the Connecticut River. A book written by Susan H. Ely and Elizabeth B. Plimpton, published by the Lyme Historical Society, reviews the varied history of the stream from Indian days to its present status. It was known as the Leftenant's River as early as the mid-1600s. It became shore to a wide range of industry through the years including salt haying. The stream, near the house of Miss Florence Griswold, was painted by many artists. Ely and Plimpton's book was purchased from the Florence Griswold Museum.
