Title:
The aboriginal owners and inhabitants of Fishers Island.
Date:
ND
Scope & Content:
Copy of typewritten of various notes on the inhabitants of Fisher's Island. The attempts of the inhabitants of Fishers Island to "give the island back to Connecticut" has brought about considerable discussion as to the aboriginal owners. The name Fisher's Island is said to have been given to the island by Adrian Block, at least it is supposed to date from about the time that Block and his gallant crew cruised up and down the Sound. As to the aboriginal owners , comtemporary references seem to indicate that during the contact period the Island was under control of the Pequot Indians. After the Pequot War, the various Indian sachems in whose care the captive Pequots were placed, all sought to establiish a right in the Island.
