They are generally carved of cottonwoood or pine in the shape of various gods, ancestral spirits, corn maidens, birds, squirrels, etc. whose influence is needed to make rain fall, crops abundant and life beautiful. The are used in many of the religious ceremonies held during the winter or spring.
