The United States Supreme Court has strenngthened the hand of Inndian tribal courts in making custody determinations that affect tribe members who live on reservations. Congress passed the Indian Child Welfare Act in 1978 in response to concerns about the removal of large numbers of Indian children from their families and their tribes.
