Title:
Letter written by Winslow to anonymous source
Date:
1643
Scope & Content:
Mimeograph transcription of a letter concerning the Narragansett and Mohawk plot to capture Uncas. The Narragansetts are preparing for war and the Mohawks have promised to lend them one thousand men for battle. In the springtime, they will enter near Mohegan territory and "make a stand that so Uncas may have notice of it". The Narragansetts hope that Uncas will then run to the English for help. The Indians will go to the English and demand Uncas from them and proceed accordingly. If they are denied, they will attack the English. Having gotten wind of this plan, the Dutch and the English have combined forces to quell an attack before it can even be set in motion.
