Title:
Tau Mauk Cum
Date:
ND
Scope & Content:
Photocopy of account about the original spelling of Occum's name–Tau Mauk Cum. This probably was anglicized to Tom Occum. There is discussion of Tau Mauk Cum's origin; he may not have been a Mohegan for he came from the area between the Shetucket and Quinebaug Rivers. This is the same area that Uncas' grandfather Tamaquawshad came from. Ben Uncas, the son of Uncas, is also not of royal lineage because his mother was a second wife to Uncas. However, the strict code of lineage has begun to be broken. In 1711, Tau mauk cum went with Major Ben Uncas, Young Ben and many other Mohegans, Pequots and Nehantics under the commant of Captain Peter Mason and Lt. Samuel Avery on an expedition to Canada.
