Title:
Letter by Thomas Leffingwell regarding land from Uncas
Date:
May 6, 1667
Scope & Content:
Mimeograph transcription of a plea from the author to the General Assembly in Hartford not to judge him harshly for accepting an offer of land from Uncas. Leffingwell sheltered and provided provisions for Uncas's men on several occasions, with much danger to himself from Uncas's enemies. Uncas realized the sacrifices that Leffingwell made on his part and offered the Englishman some land in recompense. Leffingwell is concerned that the land offered to him might "hinder a plantation worke or..publicke good".
