Title:
A letter from George Denison, John Stanton, Cary Latham and Symon Bradstreet to John Winthrop.
Date:
September 19, 1663
Scope & Content:
Mimeograph transcription of a letter describing the banishment of Uncas from Pequot land and his subsequent loss of claim to any of that land. The letter illustrates the way in which Uncas defied the Pequot sachems and continuously was banished from the tribe. When the English attacked the Pequots, Uncas took the opportunity to ally himself with the English and the British–friendly Mohegans. The English authors of this letter assert that Uncas cannot lay claim to any Pequot land, as he has done, because he was thrown out of the tribe and the land belongs to the British anyway, because they conquered the Pequots.
