Title:
Membership decision fuels tribe dissent.
Date:
December 19, 1983
Scope & Content:
Photocopy of a newspaper article regarding the Indian Affairs Council decision that the Sebastian family are members of the Pequot tribe. Raymond Geer, a spokesman for the Gardner branch, opposes the recognition. The Gardner branch, numbering around 100 people, may not vote in upcoming tribal elections in protest. The branch believes that the Pequots are a sovereign nation, and a state agency can not dictate who should be on the tribal roles.
