Title:
Letter from John Mason to Governor Talcott
Date:
October 8, 1733
Scope & Content:
Mimeograph transcription of a letter to Gov. Talcott of Connecticut, apprising him of the progress of the Mohegans in terms of reading and writing English and coming to appreciate the Christian Bible. Mason claims that they have made much "progress" in becoming like good English people. However, Mason is worried about the excessive amounts of liquor that some of the Indians drink. He asks Talcott to set up a committee of men who will seize and prosecute those who are selling or have bought large amounts of liquor. Mason does not want this duty to fall on his shoulders because he has worked up a good rapport with the Indians and does not wish to jeopardize it.
