Title:
Petition of Owaneco, Ben, and Mamohot
Date:
October 13, 1703
Scope & Content:
Mimeograph transcription of a letter to the General Court concerning the encroachment of the English onto the Mohegan land. The Mohegans have granted many tracts of land to Englishmen for services rendered. But the situation has gotten out of hand, with many Englishmen just moving onto Mohegan property without a deed. They hunt and kill the game on the land, leaving little left for the Mohegans themselves. And with the Boston Law granting Englishmen the right to scalp Indians for money, the Mohegans are afraid to venture far from their land in order to lodge a formal complaint with the Court. Includes photostatic copy of original document.
