Title:
Nipmucks Being considered for federal recognition
Date:
April 5, 1997
Scope & Content:
Newspaper article stating that the Nipmuck tribe is seeking federal recognition as a Connecticut tribe. Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal will look at the petition paperwork to see if the state will have a response. Joan Luster, who runs the Nipmuc Indian Association of Connecticut, believes that the tribe will never be recognized because it cannot prove continuous political and social activity. Luster feels that other factions of the Nipmucs are attempting to be recognized because of the lure of a casino.
