concerning relationship between mainland Indians and Island Indians. A summary of the most accessible accounts seems to indicate that in early historic times, at least, many of the encounters between the groups were of a sanguinary nature. There are other references, however, which prove that although the Island tribes were dominated at various times by different tribes on the mainland, and often sought to escape from paying tribute to them, there was also a great deal of friendly intercourse, frequent intermarriage and traveling back and forth.
