Title:
BIA negates acknowledgement in 2 cases; ruling could affect local tribes
Date:
September 28, 2001
Scope & Content:
Newspaper article reporting that the BIA has reversed the preliminary recognition for the Nipmuc tribe and the final recognition for the Duwamish tribe of Washington. Neal A. McCaleb stated that the previous director of the BIA was wrong in issuing positive findings in these cases because he overruled the opinion of his own researchers. This reversal could prove vital to the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot and Eastern Pequot tribes. Both tribes failed in two of the seven criteria for recognition but were given preliminary recogniton by Michael Anderson anyway.
