Scope & Content:
Typewritten papers relating to Indiian music and dancing.
Most of the early settlers seemed to agree that the music of the Indians was more noisy than melodious, thought very few people give accurate descriptions of the music or dances. There have been several flutes found in the graves of early Maine Indians. Besides rattles made of gourds, they also had rattles made of turtle shells with corn or pebbles inside. Many of the Indian dances were thanksgiving ceremonies. The Indians usually celebrated their victories with a dance. They also had dances to take off mourning for the dead.
