Title:
Letter from Uncas to John Winthrop
Date:
May 1678
Scope & Content:
Mimeograph transcription of Uncas's letter to John Winthrop and the General Assembly. Uncas is writing due to the fact that he feels his name has been much maligned. He fears that the English believe the rumors floating around about an alliance between the Mohegans and the Mohawks. He is also concerned that there is talk that he plans to plot against the English. In his letter, Uncas professes his undying loyalty to and love for the English. He claims that these accusations leveled against him are the products of jealous "friends" and hostile enemies. Uncas hopes that the English believe that he is a true friend of theirs, because, as he says, he often risked his life for their causes and he expects that to be remembered as he enters his dotage.
