Title:
DeVries references to corn
Date:
ND
Scope & Content:
Mimeographed transcription of notes by DeVries. He noted that the indians planted French beans between the rows of corn, which are three to four feet apart for weeding. The beans use the corn stalks to grow on. When traveling, Indians use corn meal flattened and baked in ashes as food. They carry the meal in baskets called notassen, which are made of a kind of hemp. The maize and French beans are gathered in late September and early October. They shell the corn and bury it in holes dug in the ground and covered with mats.
