At various times men ambitious to be teachers or preachers to the Indians were appointed by organizations or elected themselves to the jobs. Few of them had special preparation for the work of spiritual advisors or educational mentors. Most of them were woefully lacking in aptitude for the work, sympathy and understanding of the Indians and some even did not have even a converstional knowledge of their language.
