Title:
Town of Norwich to Owaneco
Date:
November 13, 1695
Scope & Content:
Mimeographed transcription of a deed of three hundred acres of land from the town of Norwich to Owaneco. The land lies on the Shetucket River. The deed stipulates that the land is for the Mohegans use, and can not be sold by Owaneco. If Owaneco dies without heirs, the town of Norwich and the indians will jointly agree on a new sachem. The English are not responsible for damages done by cows to Indian corn, so they must put up fences. The indians can not use English common land for their hogs. If any Indians kill English cows or tresspass on English property, they are subject to English law. The deed further states that Owaneco shall not work, hunt, fish or labor on the sabbath or be punished under English law.
