Magazine article regarding paper mills. Paper was in short supply throughout the colonial period, and the shortage became critical during the War of the American Revolution. Despite British attempts to prevent papermaking, under the government's policy of prohibiting manufacturing in the colonies, a paper mill was established near Philadelphia as early as 1690.
