Title:
Letter from Wait Winthrop to Gov. John Winthrop
Date:
July 8, 1675
Scope & Content:
Mimeographed transcription of a letter from Wait Winthrop to John Winthrop. Wait writes about a meeting with Mr Stanton and Mr Minar and others of Stonington to discuss how to prevent the Narragansetts from joining King Philip. They agreed to take a force supplemented by Mohegan and Pequot indians to march to Narragansett and talk with sachems. Ninecraft has agreed to talk, but does not want Uncas' men present. Intelligence states that thirty or forty of Philips men are staying with the Narragansett for relief. Wait Winthrop believes that the Mohegan and Pequots would bring Ninecraft in if the English asked them to.
