Scope & Content:
Photocopy of newspaper article about the Nehantic burial ground at Crescent Beach in East Lyme. Indians led by Aurelius Piper chief of the Golden Hill Paugussetts want the state of Connecticut to purchase three houses to move from a five acre site, fence in the property and preserve it as a sacred cemetery as the state had promised in 1868. Kevin McBride is doing research to locate burials. The Mashantucket Pequots are at the time the only federally recognized tribe and do not belong to the Connecticut Indian Affairs Council. Theresa Bell, spokesperson for the tribe, said the first concern is with the burials, then the land. The tribes belonging to the CIAC want the burials kept in place, and the site preserved. The Pequots have offered to rebury any remains on their reservation. The town is concerned because of a sewer project scheduled to go through the area.
