The use of inner bark for famine food was common among the northern Algonkian Indians.

The Indians sometimes boiled their corn while until it swelled and became tender then ate it either alone or with their fish or venison instead of bread.

The Indians have an art of drying their Chestnuts, and so to preserve them in their barnes for a daintie all the yeare.
