Amanda Crowe was born in 1928 in Qualla Cherokee community. She received an M.F.A. from the Chicago Art Institute and in 1952 was honored with a John Quincy Adams fellowship to study in Mexico at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel. A master woodcarver and master teacher, ahs has inspired and taught generations of Cherokee woodcarvers. Her signature piece is the bear. 'Everybody in the country must have one of my bears,' she has stated jokingly. She was awarded the North Carolina Fold Heritage Award and has exhibited carvings at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Mint Museum in Charlotte, the Atlanta Art Museum, and the Denver Museum of Art. Her pieces are in many permanent collections including at the Smithsonian Institution and the United States Department of the Interior. As of 2001, she welcomed visitors who wish to place orders for carvings. Her address was: Amanda Crowe, P.O. Box 484, Cherokee, N.C. 28719.
