Description:
Wampum. This rare sea shell was the first known money, or medium of exchange among the American Indians, having a fixed value equal to 4 cents. Its use dates back 300 years _ to 1570. It was very popular among the Sioux and Apaches, who strung the Wampum Shells into belts, necklaces, head dresses, etc., etc., which were worn by the Chief's wives and daughters, and were considered the height of dress ornament. I first obtained this Wampum from an old Indian trader, whose father had collected it while engaged in fur traffic with the various tribes in the Norwest, and I think I have all there is obtainable in the United States. Owing to its extreme scarcity, prices have risen to 10 cents each, 3 for 25 cents, 18 for $1. Mrs. F.A. Warner, Jacksonville, FL
