Harrison Begay was born 15 November 1917. He was a prolific Navajo painter for over 50 years and his work is familiar through paintings, book illustrations and screenprints. In 1934, he entered the Santa Fe Indian School and joined the studio of Dorothy Dunn, where he was of Dunn's star students. In 1954 was awarded the French government's Palmes Academiques. Served in World War II. Upon completion of military service, he was one of the first Native Americans able to support himself by painting full–time. Begay painted a timeless, peaceful and gentle world, recognizing only the beauty in the Navajo way of life.
