Scope & Content:
A five page hand–sewn booklet used as a diary from December 12, 1785 through February 26, 1786. Heading indicates that the writer was at Fishers Island. Mentions Mr. Gilbert's school and five scholars. There is considerable mention of ships and maritime matters. Several references to New London and Stonington. Names mentioned include: Capt. Rush; E. H. Sheffield; Mr. Halley; Capt. Webster; Nathan Haley; Capt. Harris; Mr. Winthrop; Mrs. Web; Mr. Vaughn and Capt. Gardiner. A handwritten table of coin weights and values for English guinea, French guinea, Johannesburg coins, French crown, dubloons, and Spanish coin occupies one page. A death notice for Mrs. Hannah Avery (widow of Deacon Peter Avery) dated Groton April 13, 1781 appears on the inside of rear cover. Back cover has a list of names including Jonathan Gilbert, Ephraim Woodbridge, Nathan Haley, James Williams, Aaron Clark and James Brown. One piece, booklet. 6 1/4" x 3 3/4".
