Evidence of prehistoric (1st to 8th century) human habitation has been found in Lyme and Old Lyme, and the sites have been named to the National Register of Historic Places. They are also under the care of Connecticut Nature Conservancy. The sites are Hamburg Cove Preserve, Cooper Arch, and Natcon Cove on the Lieutenant River Marsh.
