Summary:
The New London-built Argus is estimated by author-historian Florence Kern to have been launched in June 1791. The Argus, a revenue cutter, is one of the forerunners of the Coast Guard. During this time, Alexander Hamilton acting as treasurer used cutters to collect income for the nation through customs and tariffs. The first navigator of Argus was Jonathan Maltbie from Stratford and later New London. After him, Captain Elisha Hinman took control of Argus in 1798.
